Beatrice, Alabama was incorporated into
Monroe County in 1901. The city was established when the L&L Railroad line was constructed between Pine Apple and Rapton, Alabama.
Monroe County’s seat is in Monroeville,
Alabama, which was the home of Harper Lee,
author of To Kill a Mockingbird. Beatrice itself
is home to the legendary state basketball
champions at J.F. Shields High School and a
number of historic churches. Our tightly knit community of about 10,000 people strives
to preserve our way of life and the beautiful environment we call home.
Beatrice, Alabama is well-known for its
nature-based recreational activities including fishing, hiking and birding. Creatures like the
yellow-rumped warbler, great blue heron
and the eastern phoebe live in our forests.
These forests maintain an agricultural and
timber-based economy in Beatrice, from
which timber and pulpwood are our most
prominent exports.
Beatrice is both ecologically and ethnically
diverse. Though our community is primarily
African-American, we are home to those of
many different backgrounds.
The Beatrice Cultural Center will be used on
a daily basis to instill unity and the
spirit of cooperation within all who live here.
We aspire to bring deep, meaningful educational experiences and powerful cultural insights
to our community.
